About

Welcome to PubZero!

PubZero is a new system of anonymous, peer to peer publishing. It is our goal to create a place where media makers can publish their creations and journalists can publish their findings without compromising their identities or the privacy of their audience.

Files hosted here must be downloaded using an Anomos Client.

Why is anonymous publishing important?

Anonymous communications have an important place in our political and social discourse. The US Supreme Court has ruled repeatedly that the right to anonymous free speech is protected by the First Amendment. For instance, a much-cited 1995 Supreme Court ruling in McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission reads:

“Protections for anonymous speech are vital to democratic discourse. Allowing dissenters to shield their identities frees them to express critical, minority views. Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority. It thus exemplifies the purpose behind the Bill of Rights, and of the First Amendment in particular: to protect unpopular individuals from retaliation at the hand of an intolerant society. “

We believe that the right to free, anonymous speech should extend to all human beings, so we are developing technology to extend this right to as many people as we can.

How does it work?

PubZero does not host any actual content, only information about the content being published in the form of an 'atorrent' file. To publish a document, users create and seed an atorrent file using an Anomos client and upload it to PubZero. Other users then download the atorrent from PubZero so they can receive the document through their own Anomos client. Other people will never download the document directly from the original publisher, only through encrypted relay channels which hide the identities of everybody involved in the file transfer.

What is Data Retention?

Data retention is the practice of logging all access to a computer server. PubZero performs no data logging for HTTP/HTTPS traffic, so even if our server is seized, there is no data stored which could be used to compromise the identities of our users.

What should be uploaded to PubZero?

PubZero is a place for citizen media, politically sensitive media or media which has been censored. We will also host any other type of alternative media for distribution to audiences which require privacy.

It is not a place for wholesale piracy of movies, music or software. Takedown requests for copyrighted content will be honored if the content does not fall into one of the aforementioned categories.

How can I help?

The easiest way to help is to act as a document seeder. If you download a document, please leave your client open for as long as you can. For the health of the network, please seed everything you download to at least a 200% share ratio, although anything beyond this is helpful as well. This is especially true for documents which have a low number of seeders. If you are more interested, you can spread the word about us, send us a donation, or take a look at the source code for bugs or places where new features could be added. We should also like to have help from translators who can help us reach out to non English-speaking audiences.

What else can I do to enhance my privacy and/or get around internet censorship?

Although we have no data retention, you may be concerned that your ISP is recording your web browsing habits. To avoid this, or to circumvent any blocking of our website, you can use the Tor Project's Software as your browser's web proxy while using our index.

Where can I find the source code to PubZero and Anomos?

Both PubZero, which is powered by software called Anonbay (forked from another project called Chaosbay) and the Anomos client are Free and Open Source software. You can find the sources to both of these here, at the Anomos Liberty Enhancements git repository. Please feel free to inspect and reuse our code. Patches are welcome!

I believe you are hosting my copyrighted content. Who should I contact?
